5-Länder-Treffen in Bern

German-Speaking Member Organisations Advocate for Stronger and More Harmonised Physiotherapy Standards in Europe

Five German-speaking physiotherapy associations of the Europe Region of World Physiotherapy call for harmonisation in education, quality assurance, and advanced practice to strengthen patient care across Europe.

The German-speaking member organisations — Physio Austria, Physio Deutschland, Physio Liechtenstein, Physio Luxemburg, and PhysioSwiss — have issued a joint position paper calling for greater harmonisation and development of physiotherapy across Europe.

In Bern (Switzerland), the associations agreed on three key priorities to strengthen patient care:

  1.  Establishment of physiotherapy as an independent science and guarantee of continuous academisation from Bachelor to PhD in the field of physiotherapy.
  2. Clear and comparable regulations for measuring the quality of physiotherapy at the respective national level.
  3. Anchoring specialisation (Advanced Physiotherapy Practice) at the respective national level for sustainable and differentiated health care as well as remuneration appropriate to the qualification levels.

The organisations emphasised that greater European alignment in education, quality, and specialisation would improve patient outcomes, facilitate professional mobility, and enhance health system efficiency.

This joint initiative demonstrates a shared commitment among the German-speaking associations to advancing physiotherapy as a science-based, autonomous profession central to effective, evidence-based care across Europe.
